As a federally accredited veterinary practice, Altadena Valley Animal Clinic can issue domestic health certificates for healthy animals that will be traveling domestically from one state to another or internationally.

A certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI), or health certificate, is an official document that certifies that the animal identified on the document has been inspected, is healthy to travel, and free from illnesses and parasites that might pose a health risk to other animals or people. A CVI may be required if your animal is being transported across state lines or if they are participating in events such as shows, rides, or sales. Pets who are being adopted in a different state may also be required to have a health certificate.

Health Certificates

In addition to meeting health requirements, your animal may also need to have tests, treatments, vaccinations, or other procedures done before qualifying for a CVI. Since animal health requirements can differ depending on the destination, the species, and the purpose of travel, we recommend that you check your destinations (and airline if appropriate) to see if they require a health certificate. This is the best place to start:

We will work with you to help you determine your needs, however since timelines differ depending on your destination, planning ahead is essential. International travel preparations may need to start six months in advance of travel, particularly for Rabies free locations such as Hawaii, Japan, Guam, Australia, and New Zealand.

We suggest that you contact us as soon as your travel plans are firm so that we can schedule a consultation appointment and review the country or countries requirements and help you obtain your CVI in a timely fashion. Please call today and ask for information about a health certificate.

Altadena Valley Animal Clinic is convenient to pet owners in Birmingham, Vestavia Hills, Liberty Park, Hoover and other nearby cities and towns.

Our Reviews

  • I love AVAC! Dr Brennan always takes time to answer all my questions and does a thorough exam when I bring my pups in. I love how she sits down in the floor with them because they are always anxious. The vet techs are great and very knowledgeable. I feel like they really care about my fur babies and provide them with excellent care.

  • My family dog of 15 years passed away recently. Dr. Brennan treated us with so much kindness. She explained the process and gave us as much time as we needed to say goodbye. I’m very grateful for her compassion during such a hard time.

  • Hershey absolutely loves coming here and gets so excited when we pull up. He always comes home happy and healthy. A couple times, they have called me to let me know he didn’t eat while boarding or had a little diarrhea, but they always check with me before doing anything extra with him. They truly care about the pets in their care! Kudos to the entire staff and thank you for all you do!

  • My cat, who’s my entire world, wasn’t feeling great so I made an appointment same day with Altadena Clinic. They made sure my cat was well taken care, walked me through everything and even did a follow up check in. It’s client service like that, which builds loyalty and respect. Thank you especially to Leslie & Dr Gonzalez for treating my baby with kindness & care.
